Bansky Does New York

In Banksy Does New York, the life of Banksy, a renowned street artist is displayed. He began his journey in New York City in October 2013 when he took over New York City streets and displayed a new unique piece of art every day for a month.  The movie shines light on the bits of art Banksy set up in the city of New York. It is shocking the way Banksy has been engaged with graffiti for more than 20 years is still yet to be found. Banksy utilizes different types of art to convey his message, for example, graffiti, sculptures, and recordings. Banksy’s work of art has been shown everywhere throughout the world, for example, Australia, England, the US, Israel, Jamaica, and Canada. Most as of late Banksy spent the whole month of October 2013 in New York setting up his art. This kept all of New York on their toes and nearly everybody was searching for Banksy’s pieces of art. He would post pictures of his art, yet would not reveal himself. He would make his fans chase around the city to discover the art. It wasn’t only the art it was the manner by which he communicated his perspectives on themes that had individuals talking. It began numerous talks on workmanship and social issues. This movie superbly showed every one of the art pieces shown Banksy had going in NYC. I would give the movie a 10/10 as it completes a superb activity clarify Banksy, who he is, and how he is made an effect on the world with his talent. The movie is well directed and shows the different opinions people had about Banksy

Final Project post 10: Conclusion

Through gathering research over more than 15 different sources and putting this information into 10 posts, we have been successful in answering our question: Why protests are an important right in a democratic society.

To summarize this question we would like to say that protests are important because they give the citizens of the country a voice and a chance to give their opinions against something they believe is wrong. Protests can help bring about a change that leaves long lasting effects for the better. Some of the most common protests include the Gandhi protest, The Martin Luther King protest and the Womens movement, all of which effects are still impacting the world today. Protests are an important right and should continue to be so.

Thank you!

Final Project post 9: Kneeling down on the national anthem

Beginning from 2016, some of the American athletes peacefully protested against “police brutality and racial inequality during the playing of the U.S. national anthem. These protests began in the National Football League which is otherwise known as the NFL, when a player named Colin Kaepernick kneelled during the anthem. After this action of his, many members of different NFL teams engaged in similar protests. ON Sept 24,2017, Donald Trump called for the owners to “fire at the protesting players “ and after this action of Donald trump, over 200 players sat or kneeled in response to trumps cruel words.(1)

This is further revealed in the following video where one gets to hear exactly what Donald trump had worded and how the players reacted to his cruel words. :

We decided to focus two posts entirely on two specific protests to show how important protests are. Protests give one a voice and the ability to bring about a change.

Final Project Post 8: Womens movement

This post focuses on one protest, the womens movement. It reveals the power of protests and why protests should be continued. Protests have the power to bring about a social change that shapes not just a city or country, but even the whole world. This is revealed through the poster we made simple focusing on the Womens movement.

Final Project Post 7: During economic inequality protests help create a fair society

Protests are important in order to create a fair society. When economical changes have a negative impact on societies, for example during economic inequality, people get together in protests and ask for their right to equality.

Example of a  protest rising from economic inequality:

1) Hong has been viewed as a “divided city” with public discontent at the highest. Hong Kong experiences great economic inequality and wanting to abolish this inequality and create a fair city, protestants rose to voice against this inequality. (1)

This video reveals further details regarding this specific topic:

Final Project Post 6: clashes between opposing ideologies had long lasting effects that continue to shape the world

Different ideologies bring different viewpoints. This is important to society isn’t blind to one perspective. Through protests, we become aware of the different ideologies. Through protests people are learning about the different ideologies which is constantly shaping people’s perspectives and thus the world.

Clashes between opposing ideologies have had long lasting effects which have shaped how the world is today. The two common protests are by Gandhi, and Martin Luther King. These two opposed certain ideologies and brought people together to see their perspective and join them in bringing a better change in the society.

1) Gandhi: Like mentioned in Post 2, Gandhi opposed the British ideologies. While the British wanted to create India as a British colony, Gandhi wanted into to be independent from the British. Wanting a sub control India power, Gandhi involved many into non violent protests, one of them being the salt march.(1)
2) Martin Luther King: Opposing racial discrimination, Martin Luther King became a social activist. He wanted to create a society which was fair for every individual, white or black.(2) Like Gandhi, Martin Luther King took a non violent approach. The following video discusses how he opposed racial discrimination and the steps he took in attempts to abolish it:

Final Project Post 4: How technological changes in protests have a negative effect on society

Protests are important because they use technology to make a difference in the society. However before discussing the positive effect technological changes in protest have on societies, we would like to discuss the negative effects of the technological changes in protests.

How technological changes in protest impact society negatively:

While the advancing technology join many together in a similar course, it also results in many that join together in criticism. This “incites hatred and violence” as said by Mathew Ingaam, a long time psychologist and journalist. Allowing more people to be involved technological advancements could mean intense hatred on a certain group. Technology can be considered deadly if used the wrong way which can lead to violence and all sorts of trouble.(1)

We ensured to include the negative side of technological changes in society to demonstrate that we understand our counterparts and are making an argument considering both sides. Despite us showing the negative sides of technological changes in society, we believe the positive impact technological changes have on protests and societies is much more higher. This will be discussed further in our next post.

Final Project POST 3: Nationalist movements can lead to intense conflicts between different groups

Although we know from our previous post that nationalist movements unite people in common courses, it’s also important to recognize and understand the negative effects as well. Nationalist movement can lead to conflicts between different groups. The following two are example of protests that lead to intense conflicts.

  • Peaceful protests turn violent by nightfall in St. Louis –

Peaceful demonstrations were taking place in St. Louis over a policeman’s aquitall in the shooting of a black man. However this eventually turned into violence by the fourth day.  Hundreds of police officers in full riot gears were forced to show up on the streets. More than 80 people were arrested and over 5 weapons were confiscated. It had even come to the point where many of the police officers were hurt. (1)

  • An Anti Gun protest didnt take long to become violent in california. The link contains a video from the global news, a well known news channel and site,  which reveals in details of what happened this day(2)https://globalnews.ca/video/rd/1170768963775/

Before moving onto our next post, we would like to bring everyone’s attention back to the fact, that despite there being some chances of intense conflicts being taken place due to protests, protests must still be allowed. Through protests people can voice their opinions on how their country could be made a better place for its residents.

Final Project Post 2: Nationalist protests unite people in common causes and help the country become a better place.

Nationalism has always brought the people of nations together(unite) to bring about a change for their country for the better. Wanting to make their nation better people have used protests to voice against what they believe was not right for their country. Freedom to protest is an important right because it allows people give opinions to how their country to become a better place.

2 Examples of National Protests and how those helped the country become a better place for its residents:

  • Gandhi’s Salt March

Britain’s Salt Act of 1822 prohibited Indians from collecting or selling salt but instead forcing them to buy it from British rulers. Gandhi realized this was wrong. Therefore, Gandhi assembled his supporters in 1930 to march 240 miles. from his ashram to the Arabian Sea to collect salt from the ocean. More than 60,000 Indians were arrested for breaking the salt law. In January 1931, Gandhi was released from prison. He later met with Lord Irwin, the viceroy of India, and agreed to call off the satyagraha in exchange for an equal negotiating role at a London conference on India’s future.  Gandhi was a force that could not be ignored or suppressed. In August 1947, India gained its independence from the British rule. (1)

Wanting sub control India power, Gandhi involved many into a protest. Gandhi attempted to make India, his nation a better place. The salt March was one method of protesting against the English. Eventually Gandhi was successful in helping India gain its independence. The following clip from a movie is a  brief demonstration of the salt march:

  • March on Washington – This was a massive protest that happened on August 1963, where over 250,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial. This protest was aimed to draw attention towards the challenges African-Americans were facing. African-Americans came demanding equal rights towards all citizens under the eyes of the law. (2)
